For a unique wildlife experience, visit the village of Kolovai on Tongatapu Island, home to a sanctuary of flying foxes, locally known as "peka". These large fruit bats can often be heard before seen hanging in the casuarina trees, offering an unusual spectacle. Although spotted all year round, the best time to observe these fascinating creatures is from October to February. Conveniently, visitors can simply look up into the trees from the roadside in Kolovai to spot the flying foxes in their natural habitat.
