Directions

Follow signs for Fangatave Beach, signposted along the dirt road heading east at the northern end of Houma village, northeast coast of ‘Eua.

Option 1. The Scenic Way
This is the recommended route for first time visitors.
  1. Start on the beach walking track.
  2. It is strongly recommended to hire a guide for your first visit so you can easily find the whale tail tree at the top of the descent that leads down to the beach.
  3. Scramble down to the beach.
  4. Just before you reach the beach you will pass several caves that offer great photo opportunities.
  5. Walk along the sand.
  6. About 30 metres after the sand ends you will see a large green ship’s hawser leading up into the caves.
  7. Climb into the cave system.
  8. Pull yourself up the hawser, then follow the buoys through the cave. You will exit through a window feature.
  9. Use the tree to climb the final step.
  10. From here continue up through the jungle, heading straight uphill at first, then up and left to reach the base of the crag.
  11. Look for the hound’s head shaped block.
  12. This freestanding block marks the start of Taveke and four other climbs. Continue along the base of the crags to reach Lovely Wall.

Option 2. Abseil Descent
This is a technical route and requires proper gear and experience.
  1. Find the top of the descent gully.
  2. It is directly below the lookout marked on the walking tracks, near a post and wire fence and an old MFAT sponsored sign.
  3. Begin the abseil.
  4. The descent is not straight down. First rappel the main gully, then traverse left to a recess before descending again to the jungle floor. Clip bolts as you descend to guide your rope and use redirects to avoid rope damage.
  5. Note the exit route.
  6. The abseil line is equipped with bolts for climbing out at around Grade 14. It is recommended to leave a fixed rope in place to make the exit easier.
  7. Traverse left at the bottom.Move left beneath Small Wall, then past Whale Wall and Anokula Wall.
  8. Continue on the track beneath the crags.
  9.  After Anokula the track turns south around a spur and goes down under the pipeline. Do not touch or interfere with the water pipeline or power cable. The track then angles back up toward the cliffs.
  10. Reach Manava Wall.
  11. At the bluffs you will see two large recesses full of stalactites. This is Manava Wall.
  12. Continue around the arete.
  13. Head slightly uphill around the corner of the crag to reach Lovely Wall.

A guide is highly recommended for your first visit.
