Directions

Follow signs for Matamahina Hopo Lookout or Fangatave Beach, signposted along the dirt road heading east at the northern end of Houma village, northeast coast of ‘Eua.

Option 1. The Scenic Way via Fangatave Beach
This is the recommended route for first time visitors.
  1. Start on the beach walking track.
Hiring a guide for your first visit is strongly recommended so you can easily locate the whale tail tree at the top of the descent to the beach.
  2. Scramble down to the beach.
Just before reaching the sand you will pass several caves that offer excellent photo opportunities.
  3. Walk along the sand.
About 30 metres after the sand ends you will see a large green ship’s hawser leading up into the caves.
  4. Climb into the cave system.
Pull yourself up the hawser, follow the buoys through the caves and exit through the window feature.
  5. Climb the final step and enter the jungle.
Use the tree to get up the last move. Continue uphill through the jungle, heading straight up at first, then up and left to reach the base of the crag.
  6. Find the hound’s head shaped block.
This freestanding block marks the start of Taveke and several other climbs. From here continue along the base of the crags, passing Small Wall, Whale Wall, Anokula Wall and Manava Wall.
  7. Reach Fa Wall.
Continue past Lovely Wall. Fa Wall is further along the same line of cliffs and accessed simply by staying underneath the crags as the path continues.

Option 2. Abseil Descent via Fangatave Beach
Requires proper equipment and experience.
  1. Locate the top of the descent gully.
It sits directly below the lookout on the walking track, near a post and wire fence and an old MFAT sponsored sign.
  2. Begin the abseil.
The descent does not fall in a straight line. Rappel the main gully, traverse left to a recess, then descend again to reach the jungle floor. Clip bolts as needed to guide your rope and use redirects to avoid rope damage.
  3. Note the exit option.
The abseil line has bolts for climbing out at around Grade 14. Leaving a fixed rope in place is recommended to make your exit easier.
  4. Traverse left at the base.Move left beneath Small Wall, then below Whale Wall and on towards Anokula and Manava Wall.
  5. Continue along the base of the cliffs.
Stay under the crags and follow the track as it weaves beneath the walls. After passing Lovely Wall, continue slightly further to reach Fa Wall.

Option 3. Direct Access from Matamahina Hopo Lookout
A direct access route from inland.
  1. Start at the graveyard at the northern end of Houma village.
A rough dirt road of about one point five kilometres begins here.
  2. Follow the dirt road to the lookout.
Continue past the Fangatave Beach sign and carry on to the Matamahina Hopo Lookout platform. The walk from the main road takes around thirty five to forty five minutes one way.
  3. Descend towards the cliffs.
From the lookout, take the track leading down towards the line of crags. This track reaches Fa Wall first, then continues on to Fa Wall.

A guide is recommended for your first visit.
